You'd think growing up in a medieval abbey, surrounded by nothing but monks and hundreds of miles of swamp, would be pretty boring. Pip thinks so too, until the day he meets Perfect, a small stone gargoyle with a life of her own.
Before long, the two find themselves in the middle of an assassination attempt against the new king. Escaping into the cold dark night, being chased across the fens by a man intent on killing them...
Boring? Not exactly.
“In the first book, Ely Plot, Pip travels to the capitol on business and discovers a plot to kill the young king. Excitement builds as the two boys flee from danger, one who knows how to survive in the swamp and the other who can survive in royal court. In the second book, Fen Gold, Pip helps a Norse noble girl look for lost family treasures in the swamps surrounding the cathedral. For her, the treasure is her last hope. Both books read well for intermediate school age children. Pip is easy to like and understand. We see his frustration with some of the brothers and why he would prefer to be around others. Plus there is a section at the end that describes how various part of the story came from actual practices of the middle ages. It is a series that entertains and teaches by making sure the story is the most important aspect.” – Family Time Magazine
"...an atmospheric tale told with the simplicity and poetic rhythm of medieval ritual. Readers with an interest in medieval tales of dragons and heroes as well as those who enjoy a captivating plot and engaging characters will find this debut in "The Wickit Chronicles" to be addictive fun." - Curled up Kids
“Ely Plot is the first book in The Wickit Chronicles. Book Two in the series is listed as Fen Gold. Pip is an orphan who has lived at Wickit Monastery since he was a baby. As the book begins, he meets a gargoyle named Perfect on the roof of the monastery and smuggles him down from the roof and into his room. In London, at the same time, King Arnald, 14, has ascended to the throne upon the death of his father. But some nobles want to put his cousin Frederick on the throne and are scheming to kill Arnald. When Perfect and Pip learn of the plot, they try to save the king and bring him to safety. The front of the book shows a list and line drawings of the people at Wickit Monastery, in London, and in Ely (where the plotto kill the king is set into motion). In the back of the book are 16 pages called The World of Wickit, which pose questions and then answer them. Some of the questions are: Why is Ely called Ely? and What’s a posset? …Children who like the Spiderwick Chronicles would enjoy this, too. Recommendedfor Grades 3-5.” CatholicLibraryWorld
